Instructions for Current Adopters

The primary tasks of Adopters are:

  • Clear fallen trees to make way for trail users early in the trail season and soon after snow melts on your section.
  • Assess signage: intersection signs and trail markers both northbound and southbound.
  • Clean water diversions sometime during trail season to prevent erosion.
  • Report to CTF and AAT Coordinator as needed & requested.

AAT Report Form - The CTF requires that Adopters submit this completed form at least once a year; preferably after each time you perform work on the trail. All reports are due no later than September 30th. Your timely completion of this report is vital to our maintenance program. This information is needed to plan and execute future volunteer labors; to compile accurate reporting to the US Forest Service; and for grant applications and insurance purposes. Thank you and thank you for all your volunteer efforts and dedication to the CT. Please complete and return to the CTF office by SEPTEMBER 30.

To fill out form, use Adobe Reader. May download free version of Adobe Reader HERE.

Liability Release Agreement - This form must be completed, signed and returned to the CTF office by all those working on an Adopter section prior to working on the Trail. An additional indemnification Agreement must be signed by parents or guardians of participants under the age of 18. This agreement releases the Colorado Trail Foundation from liability in case of accidental injury or death and is commonly used by organizations sponsoring outdoor activites.

Adopt-A-Trail Program Tool Sheds

Shed Information:

photo of a well stocked tool shed for Adopter useDuring the summer of 2004, the Colorado Trail Foundation received grant money to allow the installation of tool caches in handy locations in towns near the trail. These tool caches, which are small locked Rubbermaid sheds, are near Forest Service work yards but should be available 24/7 so you can pick up tools to use any time.

The sheds contain the following tools: 5 pulaskis, 5 mcleods, 5 pickmattocks, 2 shovels, 2 loppers, 2 bowsaws and 1 rockbar. The shed should have a signout sheet for checking out tools. If there is no sign out sheet, please contact Janet and she can send one. All the sheds are locked with a combination lock - please contact Janet for the combination.

The sheds are located in:

Bailey Work Center: The easternmost CTF tool shed is located along US Hwy 285 at Shawnee. (This is the shed that used to be kept in Bailey.) The town of Shawnee is signed and located 5 miles west of Bailey on US Hwy 285 between mile markers 218 and 217. The shed is in a USFS facility on the north side of Hwy 285 and the sign reads "Pike National Forest, Rocky Mountain Regional Specialty Pack String." From Hwy 285 turn north and descend the short driveway to an automobile gate and park. Walk through the small gate and look to the left. Behind a storage building near the corral is our CTF tool shed.

Dillon Work Center: Take exit 205 on I-70. Go under the Interstate onto HWY 6. Follow HWY 6 through Silverthorne to Dillon. Turn left on Evergreen Road (the light at the top of the hill at the Lord of the Mountain Church, sign pointing to Dillon Valley). Make an immediate right (east) on Summit County Road CR51 and follow it to the end and the Work Center. Take the third entrance on the left, and turn right toward the large metal barn. The shed is on the north end of the large metal barn on the east end of the yard.

Crystal Lakes Work Center: Leadville. The Work Center is several miles south of Leadville on the east side of HWY 24. It is well marked on the highway. The shed is on the southeast corner of the fenced yard, but outside the fence.

Trimble Work Center: north of Durango. You will need to contact Ted La May or the District to enter the yard. From Durango, go north on HWY 550 for about 6 miles. Turn right (east) on Trimble Lane. Go less than a mile, past the Dalton Ranch Golf Course. The Work Center is on the left. The shed is at the back of the yard, by the CT trailer.
