Instructions for Current Adopters

The primary tasks of Adopters are:

  • Clear fallen trees by the end of June, if possible, to make way for Trail users.
  • Clean water diversions to prevent erosion.
  • Communicate to the CTF and AAT Coordinator as needed and requested, including a preseason and postseason report.

AAT Report Form - The Trail Condition and Work Report should be completed by July 15 as the initial "Trail Condition Report," relating current Trail conditions and proposed work, or any work done at the time. The same form is then used as the "End of Season Report" to relate all work done that season and any conditions not resolved which need additional work. This report is due October 1. Both reports should be sent via mail or email (preferred method) to the CTF office.

Adopters can download and complete the Microsoft Word document and then email it back to the coordinator. It's best to download the file to your computer rather than opening it in the web browser. To do this, you can right click on the hyperlink and select 'Save Target As' or in Windows XP, choose to save the document. After the form has been saved, you may navigate to the folder where the form was saved, open it in Microsoft Word, and complete the form.

Please note that the date fields to the right of the "Trail Condition Report" and "End of Season Report" check boxes must be in the format of m/d/yyyy in order for you to complete the rest of the form. If the date is not in this format, you will get an error message and will be prevented from completing the rest of the form.

To submit the form via email, 'Insert > File Attachment' within your email program.

Liability Release Agreement - This form must be completed, signed and returned to the CTF office by all those working on an Adopter section prior to working on the Trail. An additional indemnification Agreement must be signed by parents or guardians of participants under the age of 18. This agreement releases the Colorado Trail Foundation from liability in case of accidental injury or death and is commonly used by organizations sponsoring outdoor activites.

Adopt-A-Trail Program Tool Sheds

Shed Information:

photo of a well stocked tool shed for Adopter useDuring the summer of 2004, the Colorado Trail Foundation received grant money to allow the installation of tool caches in handy locations in towns near the trail. These tool caches, which are small locked Rubbermaid sheds, are near Forest Service work yards but should be available 24/7 so you can pick up tools to use any time.

The sheds contain the following tools: 5 pulaskis, 5 mcleods, 5 pickmattocks, 2 shovels, 2 loppers, 2 bowsaws and 1 rockbar. The shed should have a signout sheet for checking out tools. If there is no sign out sheet, please contact Janet and she can send one. All the sheds are locked with a combination lock - please contact Janet for the combination.

The sheds are located in:

Bailey Work Center: 81 Main Street, Bailey. Main Street
is behind the buildings on the north side of HWY 285 and is only about 2 blocks long. The easiest way to find it is to turn behind the Conoco station and it is on the left, or north, side and the Work Center is well marked. The shed is behind the residence on the west side of the driveway and has our logo on the door.

Dillon Work Center: Take exit 205 on I-70. Go under the Interstate onto HWY 6. Follow HWY 6 through Silverthorne to Dillon. Turn left on Evergreen Road (the light at the top of the hill at the Lord of the Mountain Church, sign pointing to Dillon Valley). Make an immediate right (east) on Straight Creek Road (CR51) and follow it to the end and the Work Center. Take the third entrance on the left, and turn right toward the large metal barn. The shed is on the north end of the large metal barn on the east end of the yard.

Crystal Lakes Work Center: Leadville. The Work Center is several miles south of Leadville on the east side of HWY 24. It is well marked on the highway. The shed is on the southeast corner of the fenced yard, but outside the fence.

Trimble Work Center: north of Durango. You will need to contact Ted La May or the District to enter the yard. From Durango, go north on HWY 550 for about 6 miles. Turn right (east) on Trimble Lane. Go less than a mile, past the Dalton Ranch Golf Course. The Work Center is on the left. The shed is at the back of the yard, by the CT trailer.
