The Colorado Trail on Google Earth

Google Earth lets you fly anywhere on Earth to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings, and much more. You can explore rich geographical content, save your toured places, and share with others.

Now, you can view The Colorado Trail on Google Earth! All you have to do is download onto your computer the free Google Earth program and the file for the CT. A newer computer and a high-speed Internet connection are required.

Click here to download the most recent, free version of Google Earth and install it. Then, click on the image below or click here to open the Colorado Trail on Google Earth.

To maximize your enjoyment of The Colorado Trail on Google Earth, enable "Layers" so you can view roads, terrain, and places of interest such as geographic features. Double clicking on or near The Colorado Trail route and segment points will enable a message and will zoom to a predefined view derived from material on this website.

There are many features worth exploring. One that’s popular is to use the “Play Tour” button that will “fly” the CT from Denver to Durango, pausing at each segment end-point trailhead, and see the Trail in 3D. You can pause it any time and the end-to-end tour takes 6-1/2 minutes. In the left sidebar under “Places” make sure there’s a checkmark next to The Colorado Trail and that the CT is highlighted. Look for the “Play Tour” button at the bottom right of “Places” and click to take the flyover tour. Explore some of the other features too. We think it’s really cool.

A big thanks to Jerry Brown, Bear Creek Survey, for providing the CT route information.
